Today’s episode of The Omnibus Show will feature City Councilwoman and Mayoral Candidate, Sue Finkam.
Finkam is a businesswoman, a community leader, and a mom. She was elected to the Carmel City Council in 2012. Finkam boasts a diverse professional background that includes more than 20 years of marketing, business management and human resources leadership. She is the Founder and CEO of FireStarter, LLC, which she founded in 2010 to provide marketing and public relations solutions to local and national mission-based organizations.
Tune in to this episode of The Omnibus Show to hear about Finkam’s pathway to politics, what she sees as the challenges she will face if elected mayor, and what her plans are once in office.
One of Finkam’s main goals will be to improve communication with folks in the community. She plans a survey to see how the citizens of Carmel feel about various issues. Her desire is that all citizens feel that they are being heard and are valued. The plan will be to continue with tactics that are already working, such as the monthly newsletter, and add to it by sharing more information online.
Finkam plans to share fiscal information with the community, as well. She understands that citizens want to know where their tax dollars are being spent. So, she plans to: “Make sure every dollar is assigned…where it’s going to go…what it’s going to fix…who it’s going to serve. Her goal is to continue to strive to make Carmel strong and prosperous and to maintain a high level of services, without raising taxes.
Another focus for Finkam will be to keep Carmel safe by making sure the police force is fully staffed and trained. She will also review areas like transportation. Finkam sees changes coming, but wants to take her time, review changes in technology, and “walk before we run”.
Finkam acknowledges the vast growth and improvements that have been accomplished during Mayor Jim Brainard’s time in office. She also feels that there are always ways to improve. She referred back to her time in sports medicine when, standing on the sidelines, she would watch a coach change hand position, change a stance, many times over to gain a few seconds of reaction time. Small adjustments can make a huge difference.
The International Community is another area that excites Finkam in Carmel. Carmel is already a Sister City to several foreign locations. Finkam pointed out that at Carmel High School, 102 languages are spoken by students and 78 countries are represented. With this in mind, Sue plans to increase interactions. “Through food, art, and fun we can learn about each other.”
